Kwanzaa Craft: Kinara
Starting on December 26th, families gather for seven consecutive nights to light the kinara (a seven-holed candle holder) for Kwanzaa.
Follow the instructions below to make your very own kinara.
Materials:
- Self-hardening clay
- Paint
- Small candles: 7 black, 9 green and 12 red
Begin by forming a rectangular base, about 12" long, 3" high and 3" wide, using self-hardening clay.
Next, role 7 clay balls - about 1½" in diameter.
Insert a candle end into each ball and remove. This will form the candle holder.
Gently "glue" each candle holder onto the base, using water (and more clay if needed). Make sure the holders are evenly spaced along the base.
Decorate the base with additional clay for a 3-D effect or use a fork to create patterns.
Leave the clay to harden, as per instructions.
When dry - paint the base and holders, if desired.
On each night of Kawanzaa, light your Kinara. On the first night, light the black candle. On the second night, light a black candle and a red candle, on the third night, light a black candle, a red candle and a green candle. Continue following this pattern for the duration of the holiday.
