Milk Carton Feeder

Materials:

  • Empty milk carton
  • Thin dowel
  • Birdseed
  • Heavy-duty string

Thoroughly clean an empty milk carton and let it dry. When it's dry, poke a hole on either side of the carton, towards the top. Pass a string through the two holes and tie the ends together. Next, cut a rectangle in each of two sides of the milk carton (start them a few inches from the bottom of the carton). Then, pass a thin dowel (about 6-8" long) through the milk carton, slightly below each opening. This will give the birds somewhere to perch. Finally, fill the milk carton with bird seed and close the top of the carton. Hang the feeder from a tree or balcony.

String Feeders

Materials:

  • Large sewing needle
  • Popcorn, bread, dried fruits
  • String

This simple feeder is better for older preschoolers, though it will require an adult's assistance. Use a heavy duty sewing needle and string to "stitch" together strings of popcorn, dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, etc.) and/or pieces of bread. Make long strings of food and then wrap them around bushes, branches or railings.
