Simple Halloween Costumes

Instead of spending money on a costume for a younger child who will only really trick or treat at a few houses, why not try making your own? These designs, based on characters that can be seen on Treehouse TV, are easy to make and sure to delight.

Franklin the Turtle

First, make Franklin's shell using cardboard from a large box. For the bottom shell, simply cut the appropriate shape. For the top shell, cut an oval the length of your child, from shoulders to knees. Cut about 6 small notches, evenly distributed, along the sides of the oval. Fold the sides of each notch over themselves and staple giving the oval a slightly curved, 3-D shape. Colour both pieces appropriately.

Next create four fabric straps. Attach two from the top of the top shell to the top of the bottom shell. Attach the other two so that they connect the costume at either side, just below the armpit.

Under the shell, have your child wear a green sweatshirt and sweatpants (or snowsuit or body suit and tights). Add a red baseball cap and scarf to complete your Franklin costume.

Bob the Builder

For this costume you need a pair of jean overalls and a flannel or checkered shirt, both of which can be purchased from a used clothing store. Add a plastic yellow construction hat and a toy tool belt with tools (from the dollar store) and voila - your child has magically transformed into Bob!
