Tug of War: Hippopotamus

A Crazy Quilt craft

Materials:

  • Sock
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Cotton batting/scrap fabric
  • 2 toilet paper rolls
  • Paint
  • 3 elastic bands
  • Construction paper
  • 2 big pom poms
  • 6 small pom poms
  • Breakfast cereal
  • Marker

Paint toilet paper roll and let dry.

Turn sock inside out.

Cut rectangle from cardboard and fold in half.

Lay toe end of sock at fold and trace around it with pencil.

Fold cardboard in half and cut out traced line through both halves making sure some of fold remains uncut.

Open folded cardboard and tuck toe of sock inside to fold line.

Glue both halves of cardboard to sock.

Stick hand into sock until you can grab both edges of cardboard and turn sock inside out, not letting go of cardboard.

Cardboard is now inside sock and becomes form for mouth.

Stuff cotton batting/scrap fabric into sock and push to end of sock around mouth.

Continue stuffing sock all the way to open end to make fat hippo body and head.

Wrap elastic band around tightly around open end of sock to hold stuffing in and to make tail.

Cut both toilet paper rolls in half (these are legs).

Cut some small slits in one end of each half.

Fold back the slits and glue two legs to front of hippo body at bottom (with legs touching) and two legs to back of hippo body at bottom (with legs touching).

Wrap one elastic band around neck (near heel of sock) and one elastic band about halfway between first elastic band and mouth (toe of sock).

Cut small rectangle from construction paper.

Fold in half and, with pencil, draw round ear shape with flap attached.

Cut out, unfold and separate.

Draw open circle for inside of ear on each with marker.

Slide flaps of both ears under neck elastic at top and fold so ears stand up.

Stick two big pom poms under front elastic at top of head for eyes.

Glue two small pom poms inside mouth at bottom and two at top for teeth.

Glue two small pom poms to front of face above mouth for nostrils.

Glue piece of breakfast cereal to each large pom pom to finish eyes.
