Carnival Sweet Treats

Whether you are hosting a carnival, or just need some fun food for a birthday party or family gathering, these sweet treats are sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Penny Candy

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • Food colouring
  • Pencil
  • Metal washers
  • 2 cups sugar
  • String
  • Tall glass jars
  • Aluminum foil

Bring water to a boil and turn off heat. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Mix in food colouring and set pan aside to cool.

Next, tie strings to clean metal washers and wrap in aluminum foil. Attach other end of string to pencils. Pour cooled mixture into glass jars and then rest pencils on top of glass jars, with string hanging in the glass, close to the bottom. Leave for a few days and watch crystals grow on the string! Repeat process to make different colours. When crystals are fully formed, eat the candy!

Note: Break any crusts that may form at the top of the jar to help with evaporation. You can also put more than one string in each glass.

Strawberry Lemonade Slushy

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup lemonade
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • Ice cubes
  • Water

In blender, blend lemonade, ice cubes and strawberries (frozen or fresh) until smooth. If needed, add water to dilute. Serve in tall glasses with straws.

Variations: Use different fruit combinations for different fun flavours.
