Snowy Treats for Snowy Days
Your children will delight in making these treats with you, especially because the main ingredient is something not usually found in the kitchen – snow!
Note: For these recipes it is best to collect snow at least two hours after the start of the snowfall to help ensure that you collect the cleanest snow.
Maple Snow Candy
Ask children to collect clean snow in aluminum pie plates. Leave the plates outside to chill. Next, bring one cup of maple syrup to a boil and then lower the heat to simmer for another ten minutes. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon. When ready, pour syrup into a measuring cup. Slowly drizzle a thin layer of syrup over the snow. Have children take popsicle sticks and drag them through the syrup-snow mixture to enjoy this chewy maple toffee-like treat. Add more syrup or snow as needed.
Snowy Ice Cream
In a bowl, blend together 2 tbs. milk, ¼ cup sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla extract. Next, stir in 3 cup of loosely packed, clean snow. Taste. Add more snow to change consistency and/or more sugar or vanilla extract as needed. Serve immediately.
Variations:
- Add half a mashed banana to make the ice cream creamier.
- For a richer taste, try using cream instead of milk.
- Experiment with adding other extracts, such as mint, orange, lime or lemon to create different flavours.
- Add cocoa powder or chocolate milk to a make chocolaty flavoured ice cream.
- Add goodies such as chocolate chips, chopped cookies, nuts or dried fruits.
Snow Slushies
Chill serving bowls in advance and thaw some frozen fruit juice from concentrate (but keep it chilled). Scoop some fresh, lightly packed, clean snow into each bowl and drizzle a few spoonfuls of fruit juice over each. Serve immediately.
