Celebrating World Holidays: Diwali
Celebrated by Hindu's throughout most of India and in Indian communities around the world, Diwali begins in the lunar month of Kartika. On our Western calendar Diwali usually falls somewhere between October and November. Across India, Diwali may symbolize different things to different people, but for most it also signifies the renewal of life.
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, actually means row of lights. The holiday itself is marked by lanterns and candles, called diyas, which burn brightly in and around homes, welcoming in Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
Firecrackers and fireworks, festive meals, lights and treats for the children are all part of the five-day Diwali celebrations.
