Comic Books: Help or Hindrance?

Comic books are probably more popular today than ever, appealing to both boys and girls alike. And certainly, there comes a time in every toddler's life that the attraction of comics comes to fruition. With bright colours and quick, simply worded sentences, comics fascinate wee ones.

But they do not have to be the pain of every parent. If you find that your child has all of a sudden embraced the wonderful world of comics, as with most things in life, more education will help you make the right decisions and stay in control.

Make sure that you do not buy your child just any comic. Unlike generations past, many modern comics are strictly geared towards an adult audience. Now, most of the more adult comics can only be found in specialty shops, but even the comics of the classic heroes such as Spiderman, Batman or X-Men can contain mature themes and images that may not be appropriate for your little one. Archie comics however are still available and child friendly. Be sure to read an issue or two before you give them to your toddler.

Once you have settled on a title, take the time to read it with your child just as you would a story book. The bright pictures and colours can be used to instill not only a curiosity of reading, but also a love of visual storytelling that has become a cornerstone of our culture.

Remember, used properly, comic books do not have to be the ‘guilty pleasure' of childhood. Not every comic will reflect the values that you want teach, so you should take a part in understanding what the values of the comic are and how they could influence your child.
