Run, Jump, Skip, Ride: Getting Active with the Whole Family

Somewhere just before two years of age, my son's movements picked up momentum and intensity. Running at great speeds were now the norm, so too were climbing, jumping, stomping and marching. Children quickly learn about movement and perception, cause and affect through the coordination, balance and gross motor skills required in active play

With so many pastimes, games and activities keeping kids indoors and/or inactive, we can't assume our children will always be active. By establishing energetic habits and routines at a young age, we will help our children grow to value the importance of physical activity.

Tips for Getting Children Active

  • Include physical activities in your daily routine. During the day, make sure your children have plenty of opportunities for full body play - whether it's in the park, going swimming, skipping or just kicking a ball around in the backyard.
  • Make family time active time. After dinner, go out for a walk, play catch or go for a bike ride as a family.
  • Set a positive example - be active yourself. At the park, get involved in the children's games of tag or climb the monkey bars beside them. And if you play organized sports, invite your children to watch your games.
  • Make it fun. Avoid using physical activities as a threat or punishment for being inside all day.
  • A family pet is a great source of physical play for a preschooler. Romps in the park, and games of tug and fetch are great for children and pets.
  • Involve caregivers in daily physical activities. Make sure their daily routine includes some active time by suggesting activities and games.
