Discovering the Natural World: Exploration of Ponds and Water
Here are a couple more activities to guide you and your preschooler in discovering more about the world around you.
Dip Cans
Bring the wonders of the pond to the surface! Take a large, clean coffee can and punch three holes around the rim (evenly distributed). Tie a piece of heavy-duty string, about 12" long, to each hole and then tie the three strings together. Attach a longer piece of string to the top of the three strings. Throw the can in the pond and let it sit at, or close to, the bottom of the pond. Wait a few moments and then slowly pull the dip can to the surface. Transfer contents into a large bowl or mini aquarium and observe! Don't forget to return the critters back to the pond when you are done!
Raising Tadpoles
Next spring, catch a few tadpoles and raise them at home to allow your child to witness first-hand the incredible phenomenon of metamorphosis. There are many websites that explain how to best care for and feed your tadpoles, so do a little research in advance. Of course, make sure to release your frogs once they've matured.
