Gardening for Preschoolers
Gardening is a magical experience for kids as it provides them with a chance to watch something grow and take shape.
Whether you live in a house or an apartment, these two activities are sure to generate in an interest in gardening!
Personal Plots
Give your kids their own plot to grow helping them weed, till and prepare the soil. Sweet peas, morning glories, marigolds, runner beans and nasturtiums are great plants for little growers because they are hardy and/or sprout quickly.
Next, help your child map out his/her plot by deciding where to plant the seeds that your child would like to grow. For smaller seeds, try wetting some toilet paper and having your child "stick" the seeds to it first. Then plant the toilet paper and seeds in the garden. The paper will disintegrate, but will help your child ensure tinier seeds are properly placed.
As you tend to your garden or flower boxes, have your child tend to his or hers. Teach your child how to weed and water. Check on your garden daily for sprouts or flowers and be sure to discuss what is happening. In the fall, show your child how to collect seeds from his or her plants in order to grow them again next year!
Don't forget, if you plant climbers, such as morning glories, beans or peas, they need something to climb on. Make teepees out of plants stakes or sticks from the garden to give them a surface to cling to.
Pizza Garden
Plan a garden with your child to grow all the ingredients of his or her favourite pizza (or any other dish)! Try growing plants such as tomatoes, garlic, onions, peppers, basil and oregano. When they are ready, harvest them and make a delicious pizza with the freshest of ingredients!
