Let’s Go to the Fair!

It seems for many people that one of the most pleasant experiences we have as children is our first fair. During the summer months one does not have to be in a large city to go to an exhibition. Most towns and cities of virtually any size have exhibitions, fairs or converted parking lots.

Some things to keep in mind when you take your child to their first exhibition:

  • If your children are of walking age, hold onto them at all times. With so many different sights and sounds available they may wish to run off on their own.
  • Most fairs have rides for little ones but all rides specify how tall or large a child should be before they get on. Make sure to check out these guidelines before waiting in a long line for a ride that may not be appropriate for the kids.
  • We all love the thought of winning the large, jumbo-stuffed-king-sized-panda- bear for our child. We all also know that most fair games do not make this a very realistic possibility. Games are fun but do not feel the need to put countless dollars into ones that you will not win.
  • Do not force the tot onto any rides they find intimidating or scary. Fun houses and haunted houses can be fun but also frightening. If your child shows signs of trauma before going into one, tell them it is okay and move onto something more pleasing.
  • Some carnival barkers can be friendly and fun. Others can be loud and obnoxious. If you approach a carnival barker that seems intimidating to your child, move on.
