The Adventures of A-star and B-boy

Sleep training - Day 1

posted on: 09:03 PM September 07, 2007

A-star and B-boy are big boys. They are only four months old and they are already wearing clothing for 6 month olds. They are heavy and hard to put to sleep through rocking. So we decided to sleep train them.

It's d-day, or rather it was, about 70 minutes ago. We told the boys what was going to happen, gave them and extra story and an extra kiss each. Then we picked them up and rocked them until relatively drowsy. At that point we put them in their cribs.

A-star went ballistic for 5 minutes and seemed to fall asleep. B-boy took over at that point and woke up A-star. They both cried together for about 5 minutes. Then B-boy began to soothe himself by sucking on his fingers while A-star cried for another 15 to 20 minutes. Everything went silent at the 50 minute mark, but we think they both went to sleep around the 40 minute mark. An average time, according to our friends and to literature we've read.

It may seem heartless, but it wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. I've been through worse driving home on the highway from Grandma and Grandpa's. There, you're in traffic for 40 plus minutes and you can't get out to check up on them. Here, at least you can sneak in afterwards to make sure everyone's ok.

Actually, sleep-training is good for babies.
