FAQ

Q: When exactly is YTV commercial free?

With approximately 30 hours of commercial-free programming per week, YTV’s “Playtime” block airs Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to noon E/P and again from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. E/P.

While many broadcasters have 12 commercial minutes per hour, YTV's commercial time varies throughout our broadcast day. Our regular programming blocks contain 8 to 12 commercial minutes per hour, while our pre-school programming block is commercial free.

Q: I thought YTV was for older kids. What’s changed?

Although YTV’s core audience is 6-11 year olds, our programming and target audience varies throughout the day. While our after-school block is targeted to kids 6-11, the bulk of the school-day is targeted to younger kids (generally kids 4-7). Our evenings focus mostly on “co-view” shows: shows that the entire family can enjoy together.

Q: How can I tell if a show is appropriate for my child?

In order to determine what age group a show is aimed at, we recommend using the V-Chip rating that's displayed on-screen at the beginning of every program to help guide you. Designed to help parents monitor their children's viewing habits, the Canadian Classification rating system uses consistent and clear guidelines to evaluate the content of television programs. The content evaluation is assigned a rating according to the generally accepted stages of child development. A “C” rating is given to programming that is intended for children under the age of 8-years-old, and a “G” rating indicates that the programming is intended for a broad, general audience. Although not designed specifically for children, it is understood that younger viewers may be part of the audience for G rated programs
