Re: Get Rid of In the Night Garden

Gotta go with the fans here.........

E is 3, X is 5, and they both found something in it for them.  I like that it is a low key program that they can use to unwind if we watch TV.

They love watching the characters, they make up their own little stories for what they are saying (PLUS follow the story as told by the narrator), and always enjoy watching Iggle Piggle (the character that sails in on a boat) float off into the night on his little boat, under his little red blanket.

X may be "above" the show target audience, but sometimes we will watch something that is supposed to be "above" E, so there is a nice balance.  Seeing as how X is reading at a grade 2 level, and E knows his alphabet and numbers forwards, backwards, and by 2's and 5's to 50, I'm not concerned about 22 minutes of TV that will gear them down and prepare them for bed.

Not everything kids watch has to be educational.  It should be something positive and something they enjoy.....a lot of people in these different threads keep saying is how we should not underestimate our kids intelligence, and I agree more than 100%.  Our kids are the most pure right now.  They are uninhibited in their feelings, they are unencumbered with our 'logic' when it comes to problem solving (which is why I sometimes have to look for my keys....which I keep on the top shelf of an entertainment unit 6' off the floor!), and they pick phrases and ideas up like we never could.  We are watching little information sponges grow in front of our eyes!  We are at our best when we protect them, encourage them, comfort them, and guide them...

This show is well produced, well performed, and well received in this home...and clearly by others as well.  Please keep this show going, pick up the next 50 episodes when the BBC makes them available, and keep it right where you have it.........but maybe can you please find another show to put on at 8pm?  The Wiggles are great, but kinda cancel out the soothing properties of Night Garden.

I totally agree I can not believe two excellent shows were replaced in this prime spot with such an awful show ,the content has been horrible.I refuse to allow my daughter to watch non educational television, such as this .I only hope more people will voice thier concerns and it will be changed .

I for one do not like this show.  But lately I have found my 2 1/2  looking at this show with deep concentration. I like shows with great stories,  and with conversation going on. I think with stories and conversation will  help my kids to learn to speak.

I guess i have to give myself  a little bit  more time it like this show.

I don't think that In the nigfht Garden or Fifi and the Flowertots are not up to the standards that we are used to.  I agree that there should be talking, spelling, learning shows on.  I do know that some like this show....and I accept this but I personally think it is a waste.....it bums me out when my 4yr old runs around mumbling baby talk....all my hard work being undone?

Treehouse....this Father thinks you should bring the standards back up.  What might work across the pond might not work here.

I agree with dadathome.  My son watched this show while we were in England in the summer and loves it.  In the UK it is on as part of the "bedtime hour" as the Children’s TV channel there closes down for the night at 7pm so between 6pm and 7pm they have a story telling show, in the night garden and then a final bedtime story told by an actual person!!! My son was so happy when he saw this show come on treehouse and he knows that when the characters from this show go to sleep at the end it is time for him to go to bed and he loves it and it helps with his bedtime routine.

It makes me laugh at the posts from people talking about wanting “educational" shows, maybe you should spend more time "educating" your children yourselves instead of leaving them to watch so much TV and let them enjoy the shows they like, you maybe surprised what they can learn from shows you don’t think of as “educational”.

Also every child is different and likes different things. There are lots of shows on treehouse my son does not like but I would never dream of saying they should "get rid" of a show or start a petition to get a show cancelled just because he does not like it,  It is very sad that someone would want spoil another childs enjoyment like that. When a show is on my son does not like I spend the time playing or reading with him.  If your child cannot handle not watching TV you can always let them watch a DVD of a show they  do like when one they (or you)  don't like is on!!!

Its amazing how much negativity is out there about the new shows! I must admit when I first watched the alledged 'non-educational' programme sometime last year in the UK, I absolutely felt the same way - hated it. The characters had weird names (very babyish IMHO) and felt the replacement of spoken language with gibberish strange. However, my daughter who was 3 at the time took an instant liking to it, and loved the characters. So ...I gave in and let her enjoy it.

Does everything on TV have to be educational? How many programmes do we watch as adults which are educational, apart from watching Discovery or other like channels?? Most shows we enjoy are just pure entertainment value, so why not allow our kids to do the same. There are countless shows out there which provide much education, a little bit of relaxing on the education wont do any harm.  A 20 min show everyday is NOT going to undo the learning they have gone through during the day, trust me mommies and daddies! :)

And if your kids really dislike ithe show, turn the TV off, and spend those 20 mins reading them a story or 'educating' them yourselves. Find another wind-down activity that you both enjoy together before bedtime. Which btw is what this show is meant to do (and does!)

Its really not the end of the world :)

This is not meant as an advertisement, but since a lot of the negative comments deal with the percieved lack of educational shows out there, here's a suggestion of something you can let your kids watch and feel comfortable that you're educating your kids with your TV:

They Might Be Giants is a Brooklyn based band, active since 1982.  If you have never heard OF them, you have likely HEARD them.  If you have ever watched the show "Malcolm in the Middle" then you heard them sing the theme song.

They have branched off to children's music with an educational twist with two CD-DVD combo sets called "Here come the ABCs" and "Here come the 123s".  Both X and E have enjoyed the music, and learned a LOT about their alphabet since ABCs was released.  123s only came out in February, but they enjoy it as much as the former, and have learned from it too.  It's also not as heavy-handed as you may think from a bunch of songs about numbers or the alphabet.

Try a music store.......common department stores don't seem to know what to do with them, so don't seem to stock them.  Popular book/music/DVD sites can help you too.

The value of silly-styled play and imagination use is just as important as language development and a system of fair play and values.
There is no need to bombard children with education at all times of the day, just as there is no need to have young children do two hours of homework each night. There has to be a balance and the Night Garden has allowed my two year-old to develop a nightly ritual. He watches the show at 7:30, takes a bath at 8 and goes to bed directly afterwards.
He loves the show and I can see why. So colourful and strange and intriguing. If he were to dream of his toys at night, I imagine this is the kind of scenario that he'd dream about.
It may not be educational, but neither is American Idol, Friends or Seinfeld. Sometimes it's just nice to be entertained.
And yes, if you want to educate your child, read to them rather than demanding that the TV do the education for you.

My daughter loves In the Night Garden.  It really calms her down and she is ready for bed shortly after watching the show.  I have watched the show with her and find it cute and I can understand why kids like it.  I would keep this one.  Thank you Treehouse for adding this to your schedule.

Although our household is a huge fan of Franklin and Little Bear, we couldn't disagree with you more.  My 2 1/2 year old loves In the Night Garden and it has become a favourite part of our bed time routine.

I would agree with others that it doesn't have the same educational component of some of the other shows but it is designed to be a wind down, bed time show and it is working well for our family.

The new treehouse schedule has been a little hard on us - my daughter is a creature of habit and any change in show times can turn our little routines upside down but this show has really been a welcome addition for our family.

I agree that it is not necessarily a favourites among the adults but we enjoy the quiet time together before bed much more than we enjoy choosing the tv show!

It's nice to see that there are some people who like the show.

Now we've seen it a couple of times, DD1(10) doesn't like it but both DD2(6) and DS(3) will watch it.

I used to be such a sweet sweet thing
Till they gotta hold of me.

    I sooooo agree with you.

I reminds me of Teletubbies which was absolutely horrid to watch as it had no educational value.

To the people at Treehouse, please provide somet better programming for our children, especially at that time slot!!!!

I have to say I'm very disappointed with many of the new programming, but espcially so with this program.

LOL... "Educational Value"  Why is everyone complaining about the educational value of this show?

Sounds to me as if way too many parents out there are relying on the TV to teach their children about life, or perhaps they are just too lazy to read with their kids or take them on adventures to zoos, farms, events or libraries and talk with them about things going on around them.

Also who's to say being silly and having an imagination has zero educational value?Silly names and silly places are part of being a kid... not an insult to their intelligence.

Come on people... lighten up... quit acting like boring grown-ups and see the show for what it is... a fun and nice way to end a busy day.

If you are using the TV as a way to give your children and education .... perhaps this would be a good time for you to turn off the babysitter and spend some quality time with your kids reading a book.

My kids would be so upset if this show was canceled.  I hope Treehouse will keep it on the air.
