Re: Get Rid of In the Night Garden

    Wow.... Where should I begin????

Never in the history of myself being on the internet have I ever joined a website solely because I felt compelled to respond to a message board until this evening.

In The Night Garden is a wonderful show.  It is imaginative, the sounds and colours are rich and most importantly... it relaxes my daughter before bedtime.  All of the parents stating ".... this is a horrible show etc... need to look at it a bit closer.

Not educational?  What defines educational?  Spelling? letters? numbers?

First of all, it is educational.  It teaches counting with the pontipines, personal hygiene with Makka Pakka and I'm sure if I delved deeper into it, I could find more instances of subtle education.  I stress the word subtle.

Secondly why does it need to be educational???  The number one source of education for any child shouldn't come from a television anyway.  It should come from the parents of children.  My daughter is only three and no one can believe it.  People constantly tell my wife and I that she has the speech of at least a five year old.  It's from constantly working with her personally... one on one, not sitting her in front of a television with Dora or Diego on so she can learn what a kinkojou is or solve the grumpy old trolls riddle to make it to the castle.

As I stated earlier, In the Night Garden was designed to wind kids down after a long day of playing and learning and progress them into a tired and dreamy state so they get a good nights rest.  I think it's a great show because kids don't have to think.  They just watch and enjoy and wind down for bed.

Let's put this whole scenario into an adults perspective.  Imagine you went to work and worked a ten hour day.  You came home, made dinner, did some laundry, and then all of a sudden your boss shows up with a huge box of papers and says  "I need you to read all of these and file them by morning"  The question isn't if you would do it.  If you wanted to keep your job, you would have to.  The real question is....Would you want to do it?  Would you be psyched to do it?

I don't care who you are.... the answer would be no.  Kids play all day, they go to daycare, or school.  They learn all day.  They learn from teachers, books and by example.  After their busy day, dinner and a bath they want to relax like you and me.

In the Night Garden gives them the opportunity to do that.  An imaginary land with mystical creatures that communicate with buzz, whirs and bleeps and a soft spoken man narrating the adventure.  It's a land where they can relax, watch and enjoy where they don't have to think.

Before signing some ridiculous petition to get this show off the air, please think about what I've said and put it in that perspective.  Teach your kids yourself.  Don't rely on a television to do it for you.  If you need to buy a new TV you go to the "ENTERTAINMENT" department at a shop or wherever because that's what it is.  Entertainment.

I didn't call up Treehouse and say I was disgusted or sign some silly petition to get it off the air just in case there were parents out there with kids that did enjoy it.  I wouldn't want it ruined for them.  I just choose not to play it in my home.   That's a great thing about being a parent and an adult.  You can make choices.

    Did you miss me?

In my extended absence, I was hoping that this debate would finally run its course into oblivion, but apparently this is not the case.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  This is a wonderful thing, and I try to exercise mine regularly.  I still cannot get over those who HAVE to have things CHANGED to suit THEIR preferences NOW!

You know what?  If you don't like it, turn the channel.   It's what we did back when we WATCHED any amount of TV.

this is my summer routine, with X out of school :

    -Wake up
-Breakfast (while I do some work)
    -Get dressed
    -Leave the house behind!
-Outdoor activities on our own or with friends.
-We are home sometimes for lunch, sometimes not....but I usually work when home.
    -MORE outdoor activities with friends
    -Home for dinner.  EVERY night.
    -Guess what?  Yea, we're outside.
-Home to relax a bit, take a bath (not each night) and bed
-I do my work for a bit, then go to sleep myself.

This gets changed up a bit.....the occasional road trip, indoor days because of the weather (too darn hot, rainy), or special occasions.  We went to Montana to bring my 'new' car home.  There was the week we built a very large deck.  Thing is, the TV is hardly ever on anymore.  The kids are playing with toys, doing arts & crafts, X is reading.....and they LOVE going for rides in my 'new' car......if only it seat more than two people, we'd leave the van at home.

Point is?  They are out learning about life, having experiences.  TV is NOT teaching them.

What does this all mean?  Nothing, really.....besides the fact that I'm not in here posting and egging on those who 'hate' this show or that, and DEMAND (the audacity!) that someone change the schedule to THEIR liking, or that the Powers That Be  need to apologize for exposing their children to things 'so uneducational'........jeez, if you have cable these days, it's likely digital and includes an on-demand feature.  Go there.  Seek out those shows that meet your obviously high standards of how the TV should raise your kids.  Go complain about buck-forty gas prices.  But to DEMAND anything from a TV channel?  Please!  Oh...for those of you who are just here expressing displeasure about the show....you're not included in this little rant.  I agree to disagree if you agree to just change the channel if you or your children don't like it....the way a lot of us here do.  Deal?

See you in the fall, after the car is winterized and put away......we have more adventures to get into.   I think we're taking a nice nature hike tomorrow with a picnic.

    crazybrit, Tiya Tiya....hi! :)

I have to laugh at all these comments stating "there is no educational content in ITNG, so it should be replaced with Franklin and Little Bear".  Can someone please tell me what is educational about Franklin and Little Bear?  ITNG teaches infants and toddlers just as much about imagination and social skills as Franklin and Little Bear do to preschoolers.  I don't consider half the shows on Treehouse to be educational, they are strictly there for entertainment .
I think people are just mad because they've lost half an hour from there "electric babysitter" and now they actually have to spend that time with there kids.  If your childs education is really so important to you than I'd suggest you spend that 30 minutes that your children are not infront of the TV playing with them and teaching them yourself.  Stop relying on TV to raise your children.
Treehouse please do not cancel this show because a few parents can't handel having to deal with there children for half an hour.  It is the only show on any canadian network that is actually aimed at babies and toddlers.  Without ITNG I would have no reason to continue subscribing to Treehouse.

OK i agree there show has  little education value - but my 2 year old loves the show
I agree its annoying and the sound effects are to be desired however - she finds it fun and entertaining, isnt that what its all about - Im not 2 anymore and i dont see things with a childs eye as im sure many parrents on here can say the same thing

Dora - some eduction but annoying
    Little Bear - cute
Ni Hao Kai Lan  - wow what on earth is happening here

i live in BC and we still get all the shows that some of you claim to be cancelled but do any of you remember Bannanas in Pajamas, and Elliot moose
those were also fun and probably just as annoying

if you dont like the shows that are on, then dont watch them, but remember your not the child watching with a childs mind

also if you really hate them that much then put on a DVD of what you feel is appropriate

the night garden sound like, acts like and almost looks like tellitubbies - but if you actually open your minds and eyes you will see its just a cute little show that will not influence your child to go out and start shooting stuff, nor will it encourage your child to throw a whinney little tempertantrum (unless you turn it off at mid point) hahaha

i hate it to but trying to let my child be a child and she will outgrow this show just as fast as my other kids outgrew the other bibble babble on

ok i understand we have to except this is a multicultural society but do we have it crammed down our throats

I hardly feel one show that is shown for 25 minutes  3times a week is hardly "cramming" another culture down our throats. Not if you compare it to shows kie Dora or Diego which were/are on every day and sometimes more than once.

Manderin Chinese  is the most spoken language spoken on Earth, China has the largest population on Earth. The olympics start there in 3 dats. These are all good reasons to have a show about a place.

The kids  coldn't stand either of those shows. I know I've watched them in Canada but I can't remember much about them.

    See Pokemon .....

Certainly DD1 outgrew the shows on Treehouse, DD2 has outgrown most of them and I'm sure DS will too.

We found Pontipines living in our backyard this weekend. Now my son runs around the flower garden attempting to count to ten.  Sounds educational to me.

Summer so far has been pretty yuck here. We have had to make do with our local (private) beach, playgrounds and trips to friends.

When I arrived in Canada in 2000, I was paying 65 Uk pence( approx $ 1.30 Cdn) for gas compared to 55 c a litre here. I'm not complaining about gas prices.

Lol, HI dadathome! Yeah I was wondering where you had disappeared to, and now I know - enjoying the summer, OUTSIDE, not infront of a speaking box! I've been much the same, and occasionally check in to see whats happening on the boards... sadly looks like this debate is never going to RIP, to be honest with you, it doesnt take 15 (last time I looked) long pages to say the same thing, but perhaps some parents prefer to re-iterate the same points over and over and over.... Confused [8-)] Geeked [8-|] again....

    Enjoy ur summer

Re: Get Rid of In the Night Garden

I agree with those who support In the Night Garden.

At first I did not like it, because of the names they used and what they called things.  But after seeing it a few times I think it is a good show for younger viewers.  It is educational in the fact it teaches to be tidy, counting, brushing teeth and getting ready for bed.

Franklin is good to, but I get sense it teaches kids to disobey, complain, etc as is Caillou.
Franklin and Caillou seem to be complaining lots in my opinion.  But still has some good lessons in it such as consequences.  But those shows are good for daytime when kids are more active.

In the Night Garden is a good evening programme when kids are settling down getting ready for bed, as others have mentioned as well.

My 15 month old daughter loves this show. It's about the only show that she will sit back and watch. Most shows she is running around dancing and laughing. This show let's me get my late night laundry done. I would buy the dvd if they had one.

My 19 month old lil girl loves this show as well. She has the small plush Iggle Piggle, Makka Pakka, and Upsy Daisy. She lines them up on the table when the show is on and points at them and then at the TV. She'll go to bed with all three of them in her arms. She also has the talking Makka Pakka doll, and I'll squeeze him enough so that when I lay her down to bed his song plays and she drifts right to sleep.

I don't understand how people could not like this show. At least parents of toddlers, as that is the age the show is aimed at. I love watching my daughter get enjoyment out of it. It's the only show that she will sit through. I enjoy repeating the rhymes to her and singing the songs to her.

I also love the BBC and most of their children's programmes. This is yet another programme that has done wonders for small children. :)

when i told my sister about this thread and the "petition", her response was "fine, whoever wants to get rid of the show is more than welcome to come over to my house everyday at 7:30 and entertain my severely autistic 5 year-old daughter".

my niece LOVES this show.  she loves the tombliboos and thinks the Pontipines are hilarious!  she watches it cuddled up on her mother's lap and giggles like crazy and repeats the names of the characters and comments on the action.  it's both exciting and relaxing for her.  she works VERY hard every day, with Intensive Behavioural Intervention therapy in the morning and pre-school in the afternoon, and the evening is her time to do whatever she likes, and what she likes is watching engaging television and playing TV-character computer games online. it's from this kind of excellent TV and online programming for toddlers that she first learned numbers and counting, the alphabet and letter recognition, cognitive skills and playing skills like memory and matching and pattern recognition.  and she's not a zombie in front of the TV; most programs are watched as she dances or runs around, and she loves sharing her favourite programs with me - smiling at me and checking my face to see if I'm enjoying it as much as she is, and she answers the questions  we ask her about what we're watching.

we love this show, and can't wait for it to be available in Canada on DVD.

the show isn't harmful to anyone, so if you don't like it, or don't want your children watching it, change the channel.  but don't go trying to the bully the network into "banning" it and deciding for other caregivers what programs their children shouldn't be watching on the network.
