Back to school or starting school

In 4 days( not counting today) my girls go back to school. DD1 will be in 5th grade and DD2 in 1st grade. So I'm an old hand at this. Even so it is a very stressful time of year.

Any-one have a child starting in kindergarten? Are you looking forward to it? Is s/he??

Lets share tips here on making the transition.

Yes, as I mentioned in another post DD will be starting Kindergarden this year. She is looking forward to it, and gets excited everytime we talk about it. I am hoping there will be no tears this time round, as last year it took us a long time to settle, we had lots fo tears, and DD was physically sick with separation anxiety on a couple of occasions. So we had to limit her breakfast intake to half a glass of milk or as much as she could take in the mornings. She had a snack in school, fruit and cookies with milk or juice, but she usually refused that also, and the teachers never forced her.

Altho this year, I feel she is actually ready for it, as she is older, and perhaps understands the separation from mum part of it. She has always been a clingy child and only ever stayed with my mother or with DH without me.

I have tried to ease her anxiety (if she has any, which is still absent) with encouragement, and talk of being one of the big kids now. We are also in the process of doing up her room with new decor, and new girly things. (she wants a princess room!) That is also to encourage her to sleep thru the whole night without making regular trips to our room. She manages that on occasion, but usually has to be marched back to bed...

if you have any other tips... please share Smile [:)]

Did you have a chance to look around the school before she starts?  I found that helpful for DD1, even though we went through the process again when she changed schools after K.

Will she riding on the bus? Again DD1 had the chance for a practice run before school started.

When DD1 started K, the class ran part time for the fist week or so. She went Tuesday am, Thursday am, Monday all-day, Wednesday all day ( these were all half of the class) and Friday all the class, all day.

The school the girls are at now didn't do that for K.

We took her to see the school on the last day of the summer term. We walked around, and she saw her classroom, and also the teacher. I will be going to a parent/teacher meeting before she starts school, and will try and show her the school again if possible.

I will be driving/walking her to school (weather permitting), so no bus trips as yet. Its prob a 15 min walk. Her classes will be for 2.5hrs everyday in the afternoon.

So far we are just feeling the excitement, we have our backpack ready, and are counting the days :)
