Toopy And Binoo, anyone else slightly confused?

i dont mind toopy and binoo at all in the mornings before lunch time with my little guy, but they pretend is strange ways now and again and im confused about thier gender because one day they will be fire fighters or seriously doing more traditional male oriented things and then 5 minutes later are dressed as ballarinas or fairie god mothers. can anyone shed light on this for me? i've never read the books the show is based on so i don't know if maybe i should or not? again i dont mind my little guy watching to show he just giggles and thinks how silly they are.. and i think binoo is one of the cutest characters ever. it also teachers a good message of love and kindness to children along with how magical our imaginations can be and where they can take us.

I think that's the point; Toopy and Binoo appeal to ALL children because they are not restricted by gender. It is meant, I think, to break the gender stereotypes and reinforce the idea that is normal for a little girl to want to play with tools or a little boy to play house-they are children and should be able to play whatever they want. Many parents I know would not have a problem with the former, but have a huge issue with the latter. I never did mind when my daughter played with trucks, or my son played with dolls - he even pretended to breastfeed! So yes, it helps them with their imagination and doesn't restrict them to "traditional" gender roles.

I agree, funnymom. Especially regarding how boys are viewed in society.

There is still a disconnect between acceptable play expected from each gender when role-play happens.

Back when I was in junior school( K-5 Britsh schools) 35 years ago, there a definate boys play with cars, tools and girls play house or nurse.

My girls know they can become a doctor, an airoplane pilot or a long distance lorry driver if they want to. We would be no less proud if they became a nurse or a SAHM.

The same way if DS wanted to be a ballet dancer or a hairdresser, we would be no less supportive of him.

    I agree completely.
I think this show is breaking down gender roles and displaying a positive message, for *everyone* who is watching. So many of the cartoons that are broadcasted, show such traditional roles. For example - I get a kick out of Max & Rudy - but she's having tea parties, playing dollies & practicing ballet while Max is playing with his spiders and getting dirty. Shows like Toopy & Binoo are finally taking these gender roles in the right direction - straight to the trash bin. I think it's fantastic.

I am 100% confused by the show however have you sat there and watched it ? I have a newborn baby with that comes jeaoulsy and attention seeking. Not my daughter fault however, Toopy and Binoo ENCOURAGE bad behaviour.

I ask that you watch a few episodes with an open eye. There was one on today where they had a bowl of water and laughed hysterically that it spilt all over the floor....they used a chair to get the bowl and water..... laughing saying hahaha the water is all over the floor binoo.

    Another

Baby toopy : He pee's his diaper and needs to be changed right away! he pulls it off and throws it

    Another

Toopy and binoo take their food and draw all over the walls with it laughing....

i didnt notice till my fiance pointed it out one morning after my daughter drew all over the walls with food.

2 1/2 yr olds are monkey see monkey do. It helps if you stop them sure....but sometimes you cant drop a baby do go stop them instead they get punished for something toopy taught them. My daughter doesnt watch alot of tv however toppy is a favorite. I now have to monitor it and shut it off when i know something is going to happen

so please watch and tell me what you think

Obiously my children are bad because they needed no encouragement from tv shows to misbehave.

When we lived in Montreal(July 2000-JUne 2001) DD1 did that with the cats water bowl, T&B were not shown then.

DD1 did that many times when she was 2(200 -01)as did DD2 (2003-04) well before T&B

DD1 drew over our rented appartment walls using jelly beans half an hour before our landlady was due to visit, again well before T&B.

I have never seen a childrens' tv programme showing children how to smear feaces over walls but both my daughters have done it.

Children explore by doing things. Generally things we don't want them to. However blaming a tv show is a tad ridiculus to me when most parents I know have experienced similar behaviours both before the show aired and in countries it has just started airing in.

DD is slightly confused by the unspecified gender of Toopy and Binoo, she keeps asking me whether they are boys or girls. Somehow she had come to the conclusion that Toopy was a boy and Binoo a girl, but after watching an episode where Toopy dresses up as a princess in a pink dress, she got very confused and demanded to know what sex he/she was!

Personally I feel that it would have been better if they were both given a gender, rather than leaving them genderless, whilst both engaged in activities that were originally thought of as only activities for boys or for girls, eg playing with dolls/cars, or dressing up as princesses/pirates, cooking, etc.

I totally agree, I hate the show.  I haven't seen them teach anything constructive.  Sadly it is one of my kids' favorites.  I don't mind my son playing with dolls or anything like that but I do find Toopy's cross-dressing creepy along with some other aspects of the show.  Toopy is just all around creepy.

Well Toopy was a fairy-godmother today.... further confirming what DD already thinks.

Well after watching many other episodes, DD has come to the conclusion that Toopy is a boy and Binoo a girl, and that they occasionally cross dress or pretend to be of the opposite sex, of which she highly disapproves, and calls them 'naughty'! :)

DS thinls they are both boys. But as his current favourite halloween custome is a pink unicorn.....

Fortunatly it is too big for him to wear out-side!
