Max
Max is a three-and-a-half-year old bundle of bunny energy. He is physically fearless, cheerful, enthusiastic and stubborn. His will of iron is sometimes a source of frustration to his big sister Ruby. Max doesn’t talk a lot and or go to school yet, but that doesn’t stop him from turning the tables on Ruby and cheerfully getting his way. Max loves his sister but will never do something just because she wants him to. Max loves trucks, rockets and mud. His favorite toy is his red rubber elephant. He also enjoys really tacky candy like Slime Dribblers, Chocolate Shock Rockets and Red-Hot Marshmallow Squirters.
Ruby
Ruby is a seven-year-old bunny. She is very smart and extremely organized. She is a second-grader who loves being in charge and believes she is the perfect bunny to help her little brother Max grow up right. She may be bossy, but she’s patient and she adores her brother. Ruby never gets into trouble because she always follows the rules – she also loves making the rules. Ruby loves ice skating, shopping and appliances like her telephone. Grandma taught Ruby to bake, and she frequently makes delicious treats such as cakes and lemonade. Ruby is also a Bunny Scout, and she especially enjoys selling Bunny Scout cookies in her home town.
Rosalinda
Rosalinda owns the gift shop in town and loves helping her customers find just the right gift. Not only does she know everything about everybody, she also has wonderful insights into people and their personalities.
Louise
Louise is Ruby's best friend and classmate, and part of Bunny Scouts. She's 7 years old and sits right next to Ruby at school. Louise is very close to Ruby in almost every way. They both try to do their best, but they're not competitive with each other. If one excels at something, or has something the other does not, she's only too happy to share. In fact, Louise and Ruby are so in sync, they often get the same idea at the same time and say things simultaneously or finish each other=s sentences. There are times when Louise appears to be slightly more worldly than Ruby is. She'll use words that Ruby probably knows but doesn't use. But she doesn't lord that over Ruby B she happily explains what the word means and they move on. Louise is learning to play the violin, and likes to play duets with Ruby at the piano, or to practice for their choral group.
Valerie
Valerie is Ruby’s funniest friend and is also in Bunny Scouts. She sits on the other side of Ruby in class, and isn’t quite as close to Ruby as Louise is. In fact, she’s very different from Ruby and Louise B not quite the perfectionist that they are. But Ruby and Louise would never exclude Valerie from their play. She’s just not as likely to have the same idea at the same time as they do. In fact, sometimes she’s just a little bit out there, and says things that don’t quite fit the situation. But if that’s pointed out to her, she just laughs. Valerie has a flare for the dramatic and loves to tell scary ghost stories and make her friends laugh.
Baby Huffington
Baby Huffington likes it when Ruby babysits, even though he doesn’t always go to sleep when he’s supposed to. Max is usually around when Baby Huffington is supposed to go to sleep.
Mrs. Huffington
Mrs. Huffington is very friendly and open and enjoys having Max and Ruby over. In fact she often asks Ruby to help look after Baby Huffington, which Ruby loves. Sometimes she also teaches Ruby and her friends dancing or baton twirling. She’s a bit of a character, and wouldn’t be above squeezing into her old cheerleading outfit to get into the right spirit for baton twirling.
Mr. Huffington
Mr. Huffington is fun, even a little goofy, in a stiff kind of old-school way - the Ward Cleaver of bunnies. He gets a big kick out of being the bunny who gets dunked in the Super Splash game at the annual fair. And he enjoys passing on bits of information to Max, like how to make a paper airplane fly better or how to make a shadow puppet. He passes on these gems of information in such a convoluted and earnest way that most of it goes right by Max, but that doesn’t bother either of them.
Roger
Roger Piazza is in Ruby and Louise's class at school. He's 7 and a half years old, which gives him an elevated status in Ruby and Louise's eyes. He's a real athlete and likes to play basketball. Roger is also a bunny of few words.
Mr. Piazza
Mr. Piazza owns the market where Max and Ruby do all their grocery shopping. Friendly and helpful, he prides himself on having everything his customer needs, and likes to keep his store well-organized.
Candi
Candi owns the Candy Store and loves pleasing the kids with her supply of candies. She' a little eccentric, but she's also a very smart businesswoman and when you get down to it, Candi's really a kid who never grew up or had to!
Grandma
Grandma lives next door to Max & Ruby and is totally devoted to both of them. Grandma is a bunny of many surprises. No matter what the kids are into, Grandma is able to relate to them on their terms. Although Max never doubts that Grandma will understand just what he needs and when, Ruby often underestimates Grandma’s capacity for fun, and is surprised when Grandma dresses up like a vampire or approves of Max’s Earthworm Cake with Red Hot Marshmallow Squirters on it. Rather than being the instigator of a story, Grandma usually comes in at the end, and resolves whatever issue is dividing Max & Ruby B never by taking sides but always by arriving with the perfect reaction or solution. (In one story, however, A Bug Salad, Grandma was with the kids for the entire story and it worked quite well, so it can be done, but since she doesn’t take sides it has to be handled carefully.)
